Origin of Breed: The Bulldog originated in Great Britain in the 1600's to 1800's. This powerful dog was originally bred from Mastiffs to bait (fight) bulls and bears. The Bulldog was trained to pin a bull's nose, throwing the larger animal to the ground.
Anatomy: The Bulldog is a low-set dog with a wide chest and a powerful, compact, muscular body. The eyes are set low in the skull. The shoulders are wide, and the neck is short and thick. The smooth coat can be brindled (white with patches of brown, tan, red, or black), pied (with patches of two or more colors), or fawn (light brownish). The Bulldog weighs from 50 to 55 pounds (23-25 kg) and is 12 to 14 inches (31-36 cm) tall at the shoulder.
