Texas is a huge state that has many different natural regions with widely differing physical characteristics. Texas has four natural geographic regions: the Gulf Coastal Plains, the North Central Plains, the High Plains (also called the Great Plains), and Mountains and Basins (Trans-Pecos). Each of these areas can be subdivided into smaller regions, as follows: Region Sub-regions within the region High Plains (Great Plains or Panhandle Plains) High Plains, Edwards Plateau, Llano Basin (Hill Country) Mountains and Basins (Trans-Pecos or Big Bend Country) Mainly west of Pecos River, and the Upper Rio Grande Valley (North) Central Plains The Cross Timbers, Grand Prairie (Ft. Worth Prairie), Rolling Plains, Prairie and Lakes Gulf Coastal Plains Piney Woods, Post Oak Belt, Blackland Prairie, Gulf Coast Plain, South Texas Plains

Often, Texas is dived into seven smaller regions: the Panhandle Plains, Prairies and Lakes, Pineywoods, Gulf Coast (Plains), South Texas Plains, Hill Country, and Big Bend Country.
