UAKARI

The uakari is a New World monkey that lives in rainforests and swamp forests in South America. These omnivorous (eating both plants and animals) monkeys have powerful jaws and teeth - they can break Brazil nut shells with their teeth. These relatively quiet arboreal (tree-dwelling) monkeys have a bald face and a short tail (less than 1/3 of the head and body length - this is unusual for arboreal monkeys). They normally weigh between 3 - 4 kilograms - females are slightly bigger than males. They often travel in troops of 30 to 50 monkeys. Classification: Class Mamalia (mammals), order Primates, Family Cebidae (Cebid Monkeys, have nails of fingers and toes), Subfamily Pitheciinae (uakaris and sakis), genus Cacajao (uakari). There are two species of uakari, including the red uakari (Cacajao calvus, also called the bald or white uakari) and the black uakari (Cacajao melanocephalus, also called the black-headed uakari).

UANANO

The Uanano (also called Guanano or Wanano) are an indigeneous (native) rainforest people who live in the middle rainforest Blackwater Uaupes (Vaupés) River Basin of Brazil and Colombia; they are part of the Tukanoan family of indigeneous peoples of the northwest Amazon rainforest. The language the Uanano speak is also called Uanano or Guanano.

ULYSSES BUTTERFLY
