HABITAT A habitat is a space (which includes food, water and shelter) suitable for the survival and reproduction of an organism. |
 HALLUX A hallux, or dewclaw, is a functionless claw that doesn't hit the ground. Dogs, cats, and some dinosaurs had dewclaws (and many other animals). |
HARDWOOD Hardwood trees are trees whose wood is dense, strong, and relativel non-absorbent of water. Hardwood trees have broad leaves (and not needles). These slow-growing trees include oak and maple. |
 HARPY EAGLE The Harpy Eagle is one of the largest eagles in the world. It lives in rainforests of Central and South America. |
 HEAD The head of an animal is frequently the location of its brain, eyes and other sensory organs, mouth (the start of the digestive system), etc. |
HERB LAYER The herb layer is another name for the floor of a rainforest. |
HETEROTROPH A heterotroph (or consumer) is a living thing that eats other living things to survive. It cannot make its own food (unlike plants, which are autotrophs). Animals are heterotrophs. |
 HEXAGON A hexagon is a regular six-sided figure. The compound eyes of insects have hexagonal-shaped lens. |
HOLOMETABOLOUS Holometabolous insects undergo a complete metamorphosis, having distinct larval and pupal stages in the life cycle. Butterflies and moths are holometabolous. |
  HOMEOTHERMIC Homeothermic animals maintain a constant body temperature. Birds and mammals are homeothermic. |
HOMINOIDEA The Superfamily Hominoidea includes the apes and humans. It includes the Family Hominidae (people and our close ancestors), Family Pongidae (orangutans, chimpanzees, and gorillas), and Family Hylobatidae (gibbons and siamangs). |
HORSETAIL Horsetail is a primitive, spore-bearing plant with rhizomes that was common during the Mesozoic Era. Its side branches are arranges in rings along the stem. Horsetails date from the Devonian period 408-360 million years ago, but are still around today. |
 HOWLER MONKEY The loudest monkey and the largest New World monkey. |
HUMUS Humus is the rich, organic portion of the soil. It is composed of decayed plant and animal materials. |
 HYDROLOGIC CYCLE The Hydrologic Cycle (also known as the water cycle) is the journey water takes as it circulates from the Earth to the sky and back again. |
