The Lhasa Apso is a small, long-haired, companion dog. This lively dog has very good hearing and is very aware of who is a friend and who is a stranger. It can be a very good watchdog.

Origin of Breed: The Lhasa Apso originated in Tibet, probably in the 600's. The word "Lhasa" may refer to the capital of Tibet, and "apso" means "goat-like." Lhasa Apsos are used as police watchdogs in Tibet. The Dalai Lama traditionally gave a Lhasa Apso as a gift. The Lhasa Apso was the first Tibetan breed accepted by the American Kennel Club (in 1935). It was originally shown in the terrier group, but is now shown in the non-sporting group.

Anatomy: The Lhasa Apso has a very long, thick, straight coat that requires a lot of grooming. Coat colors include white, tan, and shades of brown. The hair falls over the eyes and also forms a beard and mustache. The ears and tail are feathered. There is a part running along the back. The Lhasa Apso weighs from 13 to 15 pounds (6-7 kg) and is 10 to 11 inches (25-28 cm) tall at the shoulder.
