Sauropelta More Printouts

Sauropelta was an armored, plant-eating dinosaur from the early Cretaceous period, about 116 to 91 million years ago. This common ornithischian dinosaur is the earliest-known nodosaurid. Sauropelta means "Lizard Shield."

Anatomy: Sauropelta was about 19 feet (6 m) long. It was covered with bony, armored plates and had sharp spikes running along its neck and shoulders. It had a long, stiff tail, a short neck, and short legs. Sauropelta did not have a tail club.

Diet: Sauropelta was an herbivore, a plant eater. It ate low-lying plants, perhaps eating horsetail, ferns, and club mosses.

Fossils: Sauropelta was discovered and named by paleontologists John Ostrom and Grant E. Meyer in 1970. Sauropelta fossils have been found in Montana and Wyoming, USA.
