Being a hardcore fan of Allosaurus, it was my instinct to side with Sean. But after seeing his attacks and utter disrespect for other people's religon, plus his appaling post making use of the September 11 attacks as some kind of personal attack platform... I decided not to side with such a person. Instead I, as an Allosaurus fan, will offically denounce his acts as an act of high treason and an utter disgrace to America. You are right Timon, some people do not deserve to be called Americans if they behave in such a manner. Wake up Sean, this is hardly a US-only forum. There are a great deal of people from other great countries too, and they are watching us as you throw the reputation of our country down into the mud. This is hardly the way an American should behave here. I'm appaled by your behaviour. I apologize to all those he insulted, please don't mind him, he's not even fit to be considered an Allosaurus fan daring to make use of 5,000 people ! who lost their lives in such a degradory way.

Not only are these kinds of posts stupid. They're vulgar.

The myth & image of the dragon is almost universal- from England to China ! Where did it come from ? Every dinosaur that died didnt leave a fossil- very few did. No one knows when the last dinosaur died. I dont know if it's impossible that the earliest primitive people saw one & the memory of it stayed in their legends

Da Masta, shame on you to dare to ally yourself with such an atrocity!
from Timon P., age 14, ?, ?, England; November 10, 2001

Firstly, I would like to start by stating the fact that I am not a fan of Tyrannosaurus Rex.

When I saw the events of the terrorist attacks on the United States unfold on the BBC, one can only imagine the sheer terror and carnage in New York. What I do find very strange is how a person, an American at that, could use this event as some kind of perverse political levering tool to be thrown around in a debate that is not even remotely on the point of terrorist attacks. I do agree with Honkie my lad, that this person has no sense of shame. It's amazing he even dares to consider himself an American, and still have the fortitude to behave in such a hippocratic manner. What the devil is America coming to?

"But I can't think of a single small Ornithopod from Late Cretaceous Asia!"
Neither can I.

The Sperm Whale is the largest toothed whale. The Sperm whale is also strictly a carnivore, eating eveying from fish to squid. But you don't see Sperm whales eating Plankton.(Having teeth doesn't really help when it comes to eating plankton).

Hello, you won't believe me but I am one month into the future. Let me give u some news about up coming dino events. Not much. A triceritops will be found in Montana, USA on the day after Thanksgiving. And on December 1st. A new dinosaur will be found in Bolivia, South America. Today is December 8 for me. Oh yah the new dinosaur is not known, as a carnivore or omnivore yet. Your probably thinking, How would this person know that a new dino is discovered. Well my parents are paleos, They work in the US. Our buddies in South America were told about it and now we're down in South America.

"Good point Sean S."
I would DEFINETLY not consider that a good point.
Fist of all, there is some serious steryotyping in saying T-Rex fans will start a fight with someone if they have nothing to do. It seems to me everyone was getting along before you came along, Sean S...
Besides, it's isn't like you are the most peaceful, nice, gentle Giganotosaurus fan around. Anyway, just reffer to what Honkie said.

PS. Sean S., your point has backfired! You say T-Rex fans always fight! I have NEVER, NEVER seen a T-Rex fan say something as atrocious as you just did. So next time, come up with a better and less nasty point!!
from Tim M., age ?, ?, ?, ?; November 9, 2001

"Technically, the blue whale can be considered a carnivore."
Of course! Blue whales not only use their baleen to trap plankton but fish and krill as well. I'd think it could also be considered an omnivore, given the fact that it also eats phyto-plankton.

Re: 230 million year old prosauropods.

Then you're probably thinking about the new ones from Madagascar. They haven't been given a name yet, and the Madagascar site cannot be conclusively dated. They might be 230 million years old, they might not be.

There's also "Nyasaurus"/"Nyasasaurus", which has been a nomen nudum since 1967. It's apparently a Middle Triassic anchisaurid from Tanzania.

Staurikosaurids/Hererrasaurids have sometimes been regarded as prosauropods in older books, but they're usually classified as theropods now.

"also, where's skeptic latley?"

I have been humbled with that last expanding earth theory, it was wrong.......and well I don't feel that's there much I can really debate about, most of you know much more not just about dinosaurs but other tings too (I'm talking about Brad, Honkie Tong, etc.) So I visit this board usually only to read what these real smart people have to say.

However, I am offended by Sean's horrible attack on us T. Rex fans. I find that his comments are very low and small, as in bad. Well, small insults for small minds.

Comparing us to terrorists is sick. I know it hasn't been done and probably won't, but if anyone was to ever be barreed from this board it should be him.

Regarding Tom's latest art, I don't know what a feathered Utahraptor would look like. Both the feathered an unfeathered drawings look feathery to me. I'm not a big fan of theropods with elaborate display feathers, but I do like this one!

I do wonder about the big fans of feathers sometimes placed on the ends of dinosaur tails. Does the skeletal structure of the dromaeosaur tail suggest the presence or absence of a feather fan? How would it affect the function of the tail as a balancing pole while running/jumping?

"what's the deal with sarcosuchus (the crocodile said to be larger than deinosuchus)? are these two live in the same time or same place, and would they ever fight?"

No, they weren't around at the same time or place. Sacrosuchus lived in northern Africa during the Early Cretaceous, and Deinosuchus lived in America during the Late Cretaceous. I'm not sure how big either of these animals are (How completely known is Deinosuchus, anyway?). Apparently the 'deal' with Sacrosuchus is that it's actually not a crocodile, but I don't know much about that.

"Cheers Brad! But when I said "hypsilophodonts" I meant small ornithopods. Hasn't velociraptor been found in China and Mongolia in a variety of sites?"

But I can't think of a single small ornithopod from Late Cretaceous Asia! The only Late Cretaceous hypsilophodonts I can think of are North American*- Orodromeus, Parksosaurus, Thescelosaurus. Asia just had small marginocephalians, the pachycephalosaurs and the protoceratopids.

*Of course, these could be hunted by the North American Velociraptor, aka Saurornitholestes.

These last few posts reek of utter infantile ness:

"HHH rules!

*Groan* I thought the ridiculus wrestling stuff was gone? Why don't we just drop the entire html file instead? Saves on server bandwith, and also cuts down on the potential amount of rubbish off-topic posts we recieve.

PS: Given the idea that Velociraptor was only 15-20 kilos in mass, I think any ordinary human being could kill it quite easily, pretty much like the way you kick an annoying dog. Though I just drawing this up to prove a point, not to advocate cruelty to animals.

"to t.rex freaks:The reason I pretended that dinosaurs are a religion,is because of some foolish dinosaur fans, who want t.rex to be the best!!!!! I'M TIRED OF THIS )(*^&,CLAIMING THAT T.REX IS THE BEST!!!!! (It's annoying!) You t.rex fans, are litterally taking the idea "t.rex was invincible" on faith.(So to speak.)*shutter*................. I'm not realy as mean as you t.rex fans seem to think I am.(just angry) It seems when you t.rex fans, don't have anything to do,you start a fight with somebody.(Like Afghans!)"

It's great to see that Sean has finally really admited he lost it all by his behaviour (not that anybody really cared). Being beaten in all corners and on all counts, he desperately resorts to infantile and offensive remarks, impressing not really offending anybody, only suceeding in making a public spectacle (and fool) of himself. By even daring to compare T.rex fans here and saying they are no better then the terrorists behind to sept 11 attacks...well lets just say it's not only a statement T.rex fans will not bother about...it's a statement nobody will bother to listen too. Making this kind of statement shows nothing of the person who made it and instead of discrediting his opponents, makes the statement-maker look bad instead. Nobody is really pushing him, he's just hurting his own case by making statements like this. This person's influence here is finished, kaput. He just shot himself in the foot, nice going... I got news for this person: Not only is everybody going to ignore what he's just said, but to the contray, I am predicting a massive disapproval of this person from all quarters. You can't just come in here and start saying people are no better then terrorists and get away with it. It's a good thing this is the net, for if people were less kind, such remarks will cost the owner a great due in legal matters. And it is my advice to Sean that he should withdraw his statements unconditionally or face the consequences, I'm afraid such behaviour and political gansterism cannot be tolerated here. To make amends, Sean should:

1) Withdraw all accusations unconditionally that T.rex fans are no better then terrorists, and apologise for making that statement.

2) Behave in a way that is sportsmanlike when it comes to debate

3) Refrain from making such accusations in the future.

It may sound harsh, but these recent verbal attacks are absolutely discusting and paethetic, daring to exploit the thousands of innocent lost lives in September 11 like another commodity to add more shock value to one's statements. This shows an utter disregard and atrocious disrespect for such a tragic incident. It's not a nice task to turn out such a post on my side, but it's necessary, to do justice to the lost innocents and my friends, American or not, heckled and maligned by such online atorocities.

Have a nice day.

from da masta, age ?, ?, ?, ?; November 9, 2001

Where's Tim? Also, Honkie. I doubt Gianna was happy with your description of Utahraptor. You maybe right (you almost certainly are) buuuut:
1) Utahraptor was an animal quite well adapted to it's habitat.
2) Scientific theories are often proven wrong. New data is gathered all the time. Later the theory that utahra could not jump high could be prven wrong. We have never seen a real utahra so we cannot be sure.
3) It is very hard to keep up with all the new dinosaur discoveries.
I'm glad to see that many other people also feel that.

And anyway, if Gianna likes Utahraptor that's her decision. But you still are probably right.

What I want to know is, does Megaraptor belong to the Maniraptors?
from da masta, age ?, ?, ?, ?; November 8, 2001

This annoying argument keeps coming up, what if the velociraptors where in a pack? Who would win? Well, in my opinion, velociraptors are generally antisocial animals. They have large claws, but they are light and easily killed. They would have to hunt prey that can't fight back. So even a pack of ten velociraptors couldn't bring down powerful prey. They hunted small animals, hypsilophodontids, and small mammals. And this does not require a pack to hunt. A velociraptor can bring down a hypsilophodon pretty much single - handedly. A pack can even be counterproductive; more mouths which all need food. So velociraptors where lone hunters in my opinion, maybe sometimes they accumulated at corpses, to scavenge, but they would bicker and squabble, and then go their separate ways. So if 100 velociraptors where together, they wouldn't launch a coordinated attack at the tyrannosaur, they would probably just fight each other, making the tyrannosaurs' job easier. What do you people think?

"How likley is it that these 'morphs' are two different tyrannosaurin species? And what 'morph' does the holotype of Tyrannosaurus rex represent?"

I don't think it's very likely that they could be of different species, though it's hard to tell, given how closely related all the Tyrannosaurids are. However, I believe that this is actually more of a dismorphism based on factors within the species (such as gender) rather than them being two different species. Both morphs of Tyrannosaurus rex share the same trademarked Tyrannosaurus oral dentations (the D-cross sectioned teeth) plus other factors (identical brow bones, a key identifying factor in looking into Tyrannosaurid species) which makes it extremely likely we're looking at one species. Individuals from the robust and gracile morph have been found together recently in multiple Tyrannosaurus finds (Horner's five C-rexes and Rigsby's two Tyrannosaurus), lending more weight to the possibilty that we are looking at dismorphism within the species.

I heard that some people are suggesting a third morph, the robustus robustus morph, or simply known as the imperator morph (possibly in relation to Horner's and Rigsby's latest's Tyrannosaurus rex finds), but I'm just thinking the imperators are very large robustus individuals.

Yes, da masta, if you want to be a specisalist in some thing you have to sacrifice something else. I'm particularly good at Meteorology, Astronomy, Geology, Paleontology, and foreign languages. I'm also good at a few other things. But I have trouble with other things

T - master

Yeah, OK. Brad I randomly pick on you."

I don't have a scanner either. I just photograph my art with my digital camera and play around with the contrast until it looks good. If you have already scanned your image, you need to save it on your computer and attach the file to an e-mail to the address on the dinopics page. It's very simple.
from Brad, age 14, Woodville, ON, Canada; November 7, 2001

"Nice work correcting that person Brad!"

That wasn't my intent, da masta. I just asked a few questions to find out why SUCHOMIMUS beleives his or her statements. I'd rather participate in a discussion than just correct people all the time. Never beleive that a ten-year-old who types in all caps can't know something that you don't!

Hi!, can anyone tell me the exact height of the giant sloth? I've
looked all over the net and got the following answers:4 meters, 17,18,
20 and 29 feet. Which one is right? Why all the confusion? Can they
stand erect or just semi-erect? (is this the reason for the different values)?

JC, how does this thing work?
Do the messages get posted to you, you check them for things that can't be put on the board, and then you put the messages up yourself?
Or what? If you are busy then don't answer this. I know that you've got lots of work.

from da masta, age ?, ?, ?, ?; November 7, 2001
Yes, I get the messages, read them, then post them. JC

"I'm guessing that these bones are the femur and the tibia? The femur in Deinonychus is about 10% shorter than the tibia, but the length of the metatarsus does not suggest great speed. I don't know what the relative sizes are for Tyrannosaurus rex (because Horner refused to answer our questions!). According to _The Complete T. rex_ by Horner and Lessem, the two bones are about equal in length."

Depends on what morph you are looking at. The gracile morph actually has quite a noticable shortness of femur in relation to the metatarsus, while the robust morph has the same feature to a less extent. The reason a lot of our older T.rex limb proportion figures have been mixed up was because a great deal of T.rex recovered were poorly preserved and people didn't even reconize there were two morphs in the first place, leading to a great deal of mixed up composites. If I am not wrong, the first T.rex ever recovered had it's missing lower limbs recreated by basing them on the lower limbs Allosaurus Fragilis. And if I recall, another famour T.rex mount was a gracile morph with the limbs from a robust animal. If dismorphism and poorly preserved specimens have been preventing us from understanding Tyrannosaurus locomotion until more recent discoveries of better preserved Tyrannosaurus. In any case, Tyrannosaurus certainly had far more gracile limbs than any dromie, or large dinosaur for that matter. Horner's "study" (actually more of a sparse subtext presented to support his main you-know-what theory) on Tyrannosaurus limbs came up quite long before Tom Holtz's excellent "The arctometatarsalian pes, an unusual structure of the metatarsus of Cretaceous Theropoda." in 95', explaining the speed adaptations and physical consequences of the arctometatarsalian condition in gracile limbs, particuarlly in that of Tyrannosaurus.

I suspect that the reason Tyrannosaurus rex has been poorly preserved was that a good proportion of its individuals lived in the badlands, which is quite poor for fossil preservation. Our more complete and better preserved specimens have turned up from digging creatcious swamps and riverbeds, where great concentrations of Tyrannosaurus and other Tyrannosaurids have been found.

Hypsilophodon had a beak-like strcture on for the end of his mouth, and on the inside were teeth that seem to have been able to crush plants up after the beak had raked them into it's mouth. Of course, I don't know excactly how it got food. But maby something along these ligns.

"SPINOSAURUS COULD SWIM AND RUN. T REX HOWEVER COULD NOT RUN."

Got any evidence to back that up?

"ON RAPTORS FOR INSTENCE ONE BONE WAS SMALLER THAN THE OTHER. T REX
THOUGH THE SMALLER BONE (AND WE ALL KNOW RAPTORS CAN RUN ) ON THE
RAPTOR WAS BIGGER THAN THE OTHER ON T REX."

I'm guessing that these bones are the femur and the tibia? The femur in Deinonychus is about 10% shorter than the tibia, but the length of the metatarsus does not suggest great speed. I don't know what the relative sizes are for Tyrannosaurus rex (because Horner refused to answer our questions!). According to _The Complete T. rex_ by Horner and Lessem, the two bones are about equal in length.

What do you mean, "we all know raptors can run"? It's actually debatable whether they ran or hopped.

"SO T REX THERE FOR WAS A SCAVENGER."

I don't follow your arguments. What proves that it was mainly a scavenger?

"AND SPINOSAURUS COULD MOVE IT'S ARMS.IT HAD TO MOVE ITS
ARMS TO CATCH FISH."

Who said that Spinosaurus couldn't move its arms? It would be very strange if they were immobile.

"SPINOSAURUS AND T REX WOULD NEVER FIGHT. T REX WAS
FOUND IN MONTANA AND THE OTHER ONES. YOU KNOW WESTERN STATES AND
SPINOSAURUS WAS FOUND IN EGYPT."

And Spinosaurus is millions of years older.

"SCEINTESTS DO NOT KNOW WHAT THE LARGEST CARNIVORE IS . T REX SPINOSAURUS CARCHARDONTOSAURUS AND GIGANOTOSAURUS ARE THE LARGEST. SPINOSAURUS HAD THE SMALLEST HEAD AND T REX HAD THE LARGEST BRAIN CAVITY."

Doesn't Spinosaurus have the longest skull, according to recent finds?

I dont think its impossible for a spinosaur to kill a t-rex, well first of all they are of the same size, unlike in the movie. A tyrannosaur can loose if in some circumstances he/she is a juvenile or very old, or weak. Im not a tyrannosaur fan but i do research.
