The Test of Time A Novel by I. MacPenn |
Which is bigger, Allosaurus fragillis or
Allosaurus maximus?I would assume it would be maximus since it has
"maximus" in its name and how big did they each get?
from J, age 16, Atlanta, Georgia, America; July 26, 2001
TOM: Actually, it is not at all certain that Allosaurus maximus is a real species. Many paleontologists think that the remains of this creature are just very big individuals of A. fragilis. There are remains of
allosaurid individuals in the Morrison Formation that indicate a creature in the
range of 12-13 m or so (40-43 feet), which is comparable in length to
Tarbosaurus and Tyrannosaurus. Whether these dinosaurs are just very big individuals of Allosaurus fragilis, whether they should be considered their own genus and species (Saurophaganax maximus), or whether they are their own species within Allosaurus (A. maximus) is a matter of debate.
If the A. maximus specimens are a distinct species, then A. fragilis seems to top out at around 10 m (33 feet).
