Dr. Tom Holtz and Dr. Michael K. Brett-Surman
answer dinosaur questions for the readers of ZoomDinosaurs.com
:

Hi. I want to know how the the brontosaurus is so big and had such tiny babies. How could they keep them safe? How did they hold them without breaking them?
from Avia S, age 8, Beer Sheva, ?, Israel; July 17, 2001

MIKE: Fortunately they did not have to "hold" the babies. Dinosaur babies need a lot less care than mammal babies. All eggs have to be small so air can get inside for the babies to breathe. Once the eggs are laid in a nest, the mothers take care not to step in the nest. Having a nesting colony allows all the mothers to take their turn as baby-sitters. Once the newly hatched babies start to walk, their first lesson is how to avoid big feet.
